Sew Your Own Reindeer Leather Coffee Bag Kit - Cognac Tan

Make your very own Sami style Reindeer Leather coffee Bag with a new DIY kit from Kero.

Reindeer leather is very light but also hard-wearing and water-resistant, qualities that make it the traditional choice of the Sami people for storing commodities such as coffee and sugar. The bag can also be used as a tinder pouch for keeping your tinder dry.

This kit contains all the essential materials you will need to make a leather coffee pouch. You will also need some additional equipment not included to complete the project: a sharp needle, a sharp bladed knife, scissors, a ruler, pencil, pen and dressmaking pins.

Kit Contains:

  • Piece of vegetable tanned reindeer leather
  • Reindeer leather string
  • Nylon thread
  • Templates
  • Step-by-step instructions in English

Kit is to make approx 23 x 10 x 6.5cm Sami coffee bag.

Yrjö Kero founded Kero in 1929 in the small village of Sattajärvi, in Swedish Lapland.  Yrjö started the business with a tannery and expanded it with a shoemaking department in the 1950s. Today the company is still owned by the Kero family.

Kero's specialty is the naturally tanned hide which means that the skin is tanned with only natural substances. This traditional method goes back centuries and is by far the most eco-friendly. Tanning agents from bark are added to the process, and the leather also takes on the moisture-absorbent properties of the bark.

The leather is from free range reindeer in Swedish Lapland, where only the indigenous Scandinavian Sami people are allowed to herd reindeer. Sami people have herded reindeer for centuries, they call their work boazovázzi, which translates as "reindeer walker".
